Universal Robots

Universal Robots started as a good idea fostered by two university students in 2003-2004. At that time all robots were large and hard to program for non-experts.  But the two students, Esben Østergaard and Kristian Kassow, were aware of a huge potential for small flexible and reasonable priced robots.

Universal Robots began as a university project, when the first huge donation from the Danish fond for growth, the so called ‘Vækstfond’ was granted. Soon after, the new CEO of Universal Robots invested in the company. In 2009 the company moved out from the university and into rented facilities.

With guidance from RoboCluster, Universal Robots evolved from the being ‘just’ a university project to an innovative and fast growing company. The existence of Universal Robots as one of Denmark’s rapidly expanding robot companies is partial due to the relationship to RoboCluster and entire RoboCluster network.

Universal Robots is one of the first Danish examples of a cluster helping a new company to start up. The role of RoboCluster was to assist the company with knowledge but most of all to contribute in the board, and help find starting capital.

At present (May 2011), Universal Robots are selling 30 robots a month to 60 different countries. The company will make break even in 2011 and start earning good money from 2012. The company now has 30 people employed.
